The movie 'Gran Turismo' quickly connects with the famous PlayStation driving simulator. And indeed it is. But the story told in the film is one that happened in reality. The story tells the tale of a young man who, because of his skills in Gran Turismo, is summoned for a competition that promises to take him out of virtuality and turn him into a professional racing driver. That ends up happening but it leads down a path that highlights self-improvement and effort as well as drama and death. Jann Mardenborough left the makeshift simulator in the bedroom of his home in Cardiff, Wales, to take his chances aboard truly powerful cars on the world's most challenging tracks.
Jann Mardenborough was the son of Steve Mardenborough, Jann was born in September 1991, in Darlington. His passion since he was a child was cars and racing. Between 2010 and 2011, Mardenborough wasn't sure what he was going to do for a living in the future. He spent hours and hours in his bedroom playing Kazunori Yamauchi's creation, the Gran Turismo simulator, an exclusive PlayStation video game.
At the age of 19, in 2011, Jann found out about something called Nissan GT Academy, a program that had started in 2008 and that recruited the best players to take them to a competition in which the winner was going to be projected as a professional driver. Jann was the one among the 20 best players in the United Kingdom and more than 90,000 applicants that won his place there.
The film Gran Turismo stars Orlando Bloom, David Harbour and a young Archie Madekwe, as well as former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.
