Luca Guadagnino is a a tireless director. After the recent release of 'Challengers', the Italian filmmaker has not one, but four projects in hand. The first to hit the screens will be 'Queer', a romantic drama starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey. Guadagnino has just passed through the Pesaro International Film Festival in Italy, where he participated as guest of honor. According to Cinecittà News (via FilmUpdates), the director told the audience present at the festival that 'Queer' is "my most personal film" to date. He also revealed that three well-known directors, David Lowery, Ariel Schulman and Lisandro Alonso, will have roles in the film, although he did not give further details.
'Queer' is an adaptation of the 1985 novel of the same name written by William S. Burroughs and is scripted by Justin Kuritzkes, who reteams with Guadagnino after penning the script for 'Challengers'. The story is set in Mexico during the 1940s and follows an American expatriate (Craig) who falls in love with a younger man (Starkey).
Guadagnino describes the film as "a tribute to Powell & Pressburger.", and adds: "I've seen 'Red Shoes' at least fifty times". As it could not be otherwise for the director of 'Call Me By Your Name' and 'Challengers', his new work will also be loaded with sensuality. In fact, Guadagnino promises that the sex scenes in the film are "numerous and quite scandalous".
'Queer' does not yet have a release date, but Guadagnino confirms that it is almost ready. Filming took place at Rome's famous Cinecittà studios and, according to the director, "only the mixing is missing".
