Kristen Stewart revealed at the start of 2024 that she was taking a break from acting to work in her directorial project, The Chronology of Water through to completion. A recently released image shows the actress-director hard at work on her directorial debut, with Imogen Poots (The Father) starring in the lead role. Adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch's popular 2011 memoir of the same name, the project boasts a screenplay co-written by Kristen Stewart and Andy Mingo. In the meantime, as she continues to excel in both acting and directing, Stewart solidifies her position as a potential leading figure in the entertainment industry, actually, she has been wanting to make her directorial debut for years now. This way, she is finally achieving that goal.
A tale of turning trauma into art, the personal story follows protagonist Lidia from her earliest childhood memories in the Pacific Northwest, through explosive misfires and mistakes, children that almost-were, toxic relationships, besides from art heroes, wins and losses whatsoever. Furthermore, this is a deeply personal exploration of sexuality, creativity, and the complexities of womanhood, the film follows Lidia's journey as she becomes a professional writer and reclaims her narrative through her own words. Kristen Stewart describes the feature as raw and honest portrayal of the female body and a sensitive exploration of the emotional landscape of youth.
The film, shot in Latvia and Malta over eight weeks between June and August, features a star-studded cast that includes Poots as Lidia, Thora Birch (American Beauty), Earl Cave (The Sweet East), Michael Epp (Beekeeper), Susannah Flood (Life and Beth), alongside Kim Gordon, and Jim Belushi. Moreover, Stewart's most recent role is A24's romance drama, Love Lies Bleeding.
