As the Church battled new "heretical" creeds, there was dissension within the ranks of the Church hierarchy. The Papacy retreated to Avignon for more than 60 years before the Popes returned to Rome.

As soon as the Pope returned to Rome, rival contenders to the Papal throne split the Church in the Great Schism. Meanwhile there was the threat of the growing popularity of the reformer Jan Hus.
