Philadelphian Albert Barnes began collecting modern art in 1912 when he sent a friend to Paris on a mission. A painter in his own right, William Glackens returned to the states with work by Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Picasso.

Barnes continued to acquire art throughout his life.
