We were seconds away from death and didn’t know it. On October 3, 1986, an American submarine collided with a Russian submarine carrying 32 nuclear warheads off the east coast of the United States.

As disaster loomed, the Soviet captain was forced to make a split-second, life-and-death decision...while Washington and Moscow struggled to control a reaction of misunderstanding that could have sparked a deadly nuclear confrontation.
