At the dawn of the 19th century, Edmund Talbot (Benedict Cumberbatch), an ambitious, possessive and young British aristocrat, takes passage for Australia where he is to be an official in the colonial government.

Joined by fellow passengers from diverse backgrounds, this microcosm of society sets out on the journey of a lifetime transporting cargo and passengers on the treacherous voyage.
