Often in the evening a friendly company gathers to play cards: Champbourcy, the mayor of the town, his daughter Blache, his sister Leonida, the pharmacist Cordenbois , a rich farmer Colladan, and Felix, a young lawyer.

After winning a jackpot, they all must decide how to spend the money.
