Rapper Tory Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, has filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) following a violent attack he suffered while incarcerated.
The lawsuit, reported on April 17, 2026, stems from a May 2025 incident at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where another inmate stabbed the artist multiple times.
The legal action alleges that prison officials failed to provide adequate security and ignored known risks to Tory Lanez’s safety given his high-profile status.
According to the filing, the attacker, an inmate serving a life sentence, managed to access Peterson in a housing unit with a self-made weapon.
The lawsuit seeks damages for the severe physical and emotional trauma Peterson endured, citing the permanent impact of the injuries sustained during the assault.
The incident occurred early on the morning of May 12, 2025, when Tory was rushed to a Bakersfield hospital in critical condition.
Medical reports from the time confirmed that he suffered 14 stab wounds, including seven to his back and others to his torso, head, and face.
The attack was so severe that both of his lungs collapsed, requiring doctors to place him on a breathing apparatus during his initial recovery.
The attacker, later identified as Santino Casio, claimed at the time that he acted out of fear after hearing rumors of a bounty on his life, though Tory Lanez's legal team dismissed these claims as "absurd fabrications."
Following the stabbing, authorities transferred Tory to the California Men’s Colony for his own protection, but his attorneys argue that the reactive transfer did not excuse the original security failure.
