After more than two decades on the flagship CBS drama NCIS, actor Sean Murray has directly addressed the persistent fan speculation that his character, Special Agent Timothy McGee, might leave the show.
While providing no concrete answers about his future, the longest-running cast member emphasized that NCIS never hesitates to make shocking changes.
Murray, who has watched his character evolve from a probationary junior agent to a fundamental part of the team over 23 seasons, knows the audience is keeping a close eye on his tenure.
"There's always an element of the gossip thing that comes up," Sean told TV Line, acknowledging the ongoing rumors. He reminded viewers that the show operates under a rule of unpredictability.
"Things can take big, unexpected turns with characters," he teased, delivering a subtle warning: "No one is ever quite safe on this show."
Murray pointed to one of the series’ most memorable twists as proof of this rule.
Sean referenced the sudden exit of Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander), stating, "Don't forget: We were also the show [where] one of the lead characters took a bullet and died at the end of season 2."
This dramatic history underscores that any character, even one as central as McGee, could potentially face an unexpected fate.
The current wave of fan anxiety intensified because the ongoing 23rd season features a storyline directly affecting McGee.
The season's sixth episode sees Murray's character kidnapped while promoting his popular Deep Six crime novel series, escalating fears that the character's long journey might soon end.
Despite the uncertainty he created, Sean promised viewers that the show is still committed to delivering compelling and surprising stories.
He teased major events for the current season, adding, "I can tell you there's stuff coming up this year that longtime fans of the show are really going to enjoy, because it's different for us and unexpected."
