Comedian and animal activist Rebecca Corry is taking legal action against the City of Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass, and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) over the poor treatment of animals in city shelters and on downtown's Skid Row.
Rebecca Corry, who was a finalist on Last Comic Standing, is the founder of the Stand Up For Pits Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to saving the lives of pit bull-type dogs.
Her organization filed a lawsuit claiming that the city and its agencies failed to properly follow and enforce animal cruelty laws, leading to widespread suffering among stray animals.
The lawsuit specifically names Mayor Karen Bass, the LAPD, Los Angeles Animal Services, and the agency's manager, Annette Ramirez.
The foundation argues that these entities are to blame for neglecting their legal duty to care for stray animals.
The Stand Up For Pits Foundation claims that because city officials failed to do their job, the nonprofit had to step in.
The organization spent over $50,000 to rescue and provide medical care for 11 dogs that they say the city should have been protecting.
Corry's foundation asks the court to require the city to commit to fulfilling its legal duties to the animals on the streets.
Furthermore, the lawsuit seeks repayment for the money the organization spent caring for the neglected animals, essentially compensating them for doing the city's work.
