The son of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, was arrested on suspicion of murder after the couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
The victims, 78-year-old Rob Reiner and 68-year-old Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered at their residence in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood after a 911 call around 3:40 PM local time.
According to law enforcement sources, the victims sustained stab wounds.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) quickly identified the case as a homicide. Later that evening, police located and arrested the couple's son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner.
Reports indicate that Rob and Michele Reiner's daughter, Romy, found her parents and immediately contacted authorities.
She informed police that her brother, Nick, lived at the home and was nowhere to be found when she arrived, leading her to identify him as a potential suspect who was "dangerous" and may have fled the scene.
Nick Reiner was missing for several hours. Police successfully took him into custody at approximately 9:15 PM Sunday. He currently remains in police custody, held without bail.
Furthermore, police Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed the arrest on Monday, stating that Nick Reiner was "booked for murder" in connection with his parents' killings.
Authorities plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges on Tuesday.
The incident brings attention to Nick Reiner’s public struggle with addiction.
However, over a decade ago, he spoke openly about his battles with substance abuse and homelessness, which he detailed in the 2016 film Being Charlie.
Rob Reiner directed the film, which Nick co-wrote, basing the story loosely on his personal experiences.
At the time, both father and son described how making the movie helped them address their strained relationship.
In a brief statement released Monday, the family expressed profound sorrow. "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner," the family said.
"We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
