An anonymous tip sparked a major search operation in northern Mexico for Nancy Guthrie, the missing 84-year-old mother of NBC Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie.
On Thursday, June 11, 2026, reports revealed that a Mexican volunteer search collective launched an intensive effort near the border after a caller claimed someone buried the missing grandmother in an unmarked grave.
Buscando Corazones Nogales, a volunteer organization dedicated to locating missing individuals in Mexico, conducted the search.
Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, the head of the collective, stated that the group received an anonymous call alleging that someone left Nancy Guthrie’s remains in a remote area northwest of Nogales, Sonora, near a local stream.
Volunteers, accompanied by the Sonora State Commission for the Search of Missing Persons and local security forces, focused their efforts on a rugged terrain where the group had previously uncovered 25 unmarked graves during separate recovery operations.
While the team discovered four additional bodies during this specific push, search organizers confirmed that none of the remains matched Nancy Guthrie's description.
After all the collective noted that the initial unverified results do not entirely rule out future operations in the area as they continue to evaluate the information.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department in Arizona issued a swift statement addressing the international development.
Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that his department is fully aware of the reports regarding the anonymous tip provided to the Mexican collective, but clarified that US investigators have not yet been formally contacted by Mexican authorities regarding any findings.
Nanos emphasized that the case remains an active, ongoing investigation and that his team will continue to track down any credible leads.
