Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway will star in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestselling psychological thriller, Verity. The news comes on the heels of the successful film adaptation of Hoover's It Ends With Us, which captivated audiences worldwide. Hathaway will take on the role of Verity Crawford, a famous author who gets in a devastating accident that leaves her badly injured and incapacitated. So her husband Jeremy offers a struggling writer named Lowen a huge sum of money to complete the remaining books in the series. Therefore, as a young writer, Lowen Ashleigh is hired to complete Verity's unfinished novel, but she soon becomes entangled in a web of secrets and lies.
Michael Showalter, who recently directed Anne Hathaway in the romantic comedy The Idea of You, will helm the Verity film adaptation for Amazon MGM. Moreover, the film will aim for a theatrical release with a screenplay by Nick Antosca building upon previous drafts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley & April Maguire. Actually, Anne Hathaway, Colleen Hoover, and Michael Showalter will produce the film under their respective banners: Somewhere Pictures, Heartbones Entertainment, and Semi-Formal Productions. Additional producers include Nick Antosca (Eat the Cat), Jordana Mollick (Semi-Formal), and Stacey Sher (Shiny Penny). Lauren Levine (Heartbones) will serve as executive producer. In addition, Verity is part of Semi-Formal's first-look film deal with Amazon MGM.
Originally self-published in 2018, Verity quickly became a literary sensation, spending months on the New York Times best-sellers list and selling over a million copies in 2023 alone. Likewise, the story is a gothic, psychosexual thriller reminiscent of Rebecca and Gone Girl. In sum, Showalter’s film and television credits include The Big Sick, starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan.
