Melissa Gilbert has publicly defended her husband, Timothy Busfield, as he faces charges of child sexual abuse.
In a letter sent to the judge, Melissa described Timothy as possessing the "strongest moral compass" of anyone she has ever known.
She wrote the letter to support his request for release from custody while he awaits trial.
Melissa called Timothy her "rock" and the "beating heart" of their large family, emphasizing his character and his commitment to helping others.
Timothy surrendered to authorities in New Mexico earlier this week. A warrant for his arrest alleged that he sexually assaulted two children on the set of the television show The Cleaning Lady.
Despite the severity of these claims, Timothy has denied all allegations and maintains his innocence. Currently, the court is holding him without bond as the legal process moves forward.
In her letter, Melissa shared that she has heard from many professional colleagues and former students who speak highly of Timothy's kindness and integrity.
She also highlighted his relationship with her son, Michael Boxleitner.
Michael provided his own letter of support, calling Timothy a "hero" who has guided him for the past fifteen years.
Michael even noted that Timothy has shown up for him more consistently than his biological father, actor Bruce Boxleitner.
The defense aims to use these testimonials to demonstrate that Timothy is not a flight risk or a danger to the community.
Melissa insisted that her husband starts every day with compassion and has dedicated himself to being of service to those around him.
While the allegations have shocked the industry, Melissa remains steadfast in her belief in Timothy’s innocence.
The judge will consider these statements as the case continues to develop in the New Mexico court system.
