'We Bury The Dead' started production almost two years ago, with Zak Hilditch as writer and director and Daisy Ridley ('Sometimes I Think About Dying') as the main character, Ava Newman, and soon it will get to see the light, with Umbrella Entertainment as the only distributor for the film yet.
The film just premiered at SXSW 2025, and the first reviews are going around on twitter already, but before we talk about what they're saying, let us share some details about this survival horror movie that is trying to do something different with the zombie genre.
'We Bury The Dead' follows main character Ava (Ridley), a woman losing herself in grief and desperation as she tries to find her husband after a fatal military experiment. When Ava joins a squad to start retrieving bodies in the hopes of finding her husband dead or alive, everything takes a dark turn when the corpses they are handling start acting alive.
After the SXSW screening, atendees have been on Twitter commenting about the best feats of this film, with the general consensus being that the movie effectively makes something different out of the zombie genre, using it as a mean to explore grief and its stages, making it a really emotional drama that doesn't stop being gory and a little bit revolting.
Everyone is also remarking how stunning and effective the cinematography and sound design are, mentioning them as the best technichal aspects of this film, alongside the unbelievable acting by Ridley.
Let's hope that we get a trailer soon enough after this screening, and that it lands a good distribution deal for the United States soon enough.
