The Sympathizer, HBO's ambitious miniseries starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by the acclaimed Park Chan-wook, will premiere in April this year on MAX (the name of the HBO Max platform starting February 27). This highly anticipated release, which coincides with the Emmy Awards eligibility window, is shaping up to be one of the most outstanding productions of the season.
Based on the award-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, the fictionalized drama delves into the genre of espionage and cultural satire. The story follows the Captain, played by Hoa Xuande, a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy, in the last days of the Vietnam War and his adjustment as a refugee in Los Angeles. What makes it peculiar is the way the protagonist must continue his espionage work while trying to assimilate to a new life.
The project, co-produced by award-winning studio A24 and Rhombus Media, in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media, tantalizes a richly scenic and multifaceted narrative through its diverse characters. Downey Jr. not only plays multiple on-screen roles, but also serves as executive producer alongside Chan-wook, who directed the first three episodes. In addition, rounding out the cast are Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, among others.
In fact, The Sympathizer's plot revolves around the duality of identities, the challenges of integration and the persistence of espionage duty in a foreign context, aspects that have made it one of the network's most anticipated series.
Robert Downey Jr's next big role is 'The Sympathizer', but this time on the small screen. It will be seen from April 14, 2024 in MAX's catalog.
