Van Helsing, one of the big screen's most iconic monster hunter, will make his return for a new television series. This adaptation, produced by Elementary's Rob Doherty, will have Jonathan Lee as lead showrunner and promises to bring contemporary take on the character who first appeared in Bram stoker's classic gothic novel Dracula. According to the official press release, the series, which will be broadcast in the United States on CBS, will feature DC. Abraham Van Helsing working alongside his ex, the relentless FBI special agent Mina Harker, in order to solve the most harrowing cases in New York City. Doherty is no stranger to to adapting timesless characters to the modern world. With Elementary, the producer reinvented the Sharlock Holmes story with Jonny Lee Miller as the titular detective and Lucy Liu as Dr. Watson.
This project will represent the second attemp to the monster hunter's universe to home screens. Previously, the Syfy channel presented a proposal centered on the story of one of the descendants, played by actress Kelly Overton, which aired for five seasons between 2016 and 2021. In addition, Van Helsing also had its own solo film in 2004, with Hugh Jackman in the title role. A decade and a half later, the actor Tom Cruise would become a similar figure with The Mummy (2017). However, the underperformance of this film at the box office led to the complete abandonment of those plans for Universal's forgotten Dark Universe.
In fact, at the moment, this new television production is in the early stages of development and has no cast or tentative premiere window. For now, we will only have to wait for more details on the TV series.
